Rose to the challenge

Embroidered this rose for a special coat that was being made for a friend, one of ~100 roses that many different people made.  They were all about the same size/shape, but each rose was just a bit different, nice!  Delighted to be able to participate.  Wasn’t sure how it would go, but impressed myself.  And the coat itself is AMAZING!  Kudos to all who made this come together!  So very grateful for friends’ guidance and encouragement.

We’ve been pretty good about reminding each other to go out for walks—nice for fresh air, to get away from work/computers and to spend some time talking.   It’s been good to stretch legs and watch spring arrive—tulips, forsythia, emerald grass, leaves, cherry, plum, lilac, dogwood and of course, all the yard cleanup and dead branches.   On one of those walks I picked up a few dried out sticks that caught my eye, thinking “surely medieval people would be able to pick up a stick and make a nalbinding needle at need,” pocketed them, and kept going.   Found them in the pocket a few days later and put them on the countertop.   Came across them a few days later . “Mmmn, was going to do a thing.”   The sticks eyed me from the countertop where I’d deposited them, asking why I’d picked them up if I wasn’t going to go through with this.   I’m not a woodworker so didn’t really know where to start, but finally steeled myself to attempt it, saw a video someone made an...

New plants! Get yer new plants here!

It’s no secret that I LOVE plants.  Farming genes, a mom with a green thumb who shared her love of plants, and a passion for the outdoors/nature—I have many and can’t help growing more.  Want great food or eye candy without great cost?  Grow plants!   In winter I’m longing for green & over the top when plants stuck indoors (like me) surprise me with sudden bright colored blooms or tasty greens!  The pandemic found me me rooting new plants from store leftovers (the bottoms of celery, green onions, etc.) and growing new plants from cuttings.  They’s such joy in green things growing—especially when it’s not green outside.  If you’re not feeling the green gene, you can imagine my patient other half coping with ALL THE PLANTS.  Early spring happened and there were even more plants!  'Cuz, yes, I LOVE plants!  Couldn’t use them all myself, wanted them to have homes, and the prices of plants are ridiculous, so I had a thought.  Lo...

Slip, slip, slipper, or, More adventures in reading patterns

I read, I’m not dyslexic (although I’ve had moments), I’m not by nature averse to learning by reading, but my experience with written instructions has often been frustrating.   User manuals.   No.   Assembly instructions.   Nope.   Help text online.   Eyeroll.   So reading knitting patterns in knitting language?   Not my first choice for a fun activity.   BUT fiber mentor/enabler encouraged two of us students to take a class with her to make felted slippers.   Been wanting to try felting so took a step on faith, trusting my mentor, and took a deep breath.   Class came with a pre-homework assignment.   Get supplies, cast on, knit so far, etc.   Shopping-check.   Long tail cast on-ch…. er, need a longer tail.   2 nd try, nope, longer still.   OK, need to learn to better estimate long tail cast ons.   We used size 13 needles—big honking space needles!—odd after working on the small size 1s to make smal...
