Ring Thing

I've always loved silver--it's just something special--& have always had a thing for silver rings.  A friend was recently teaching a class in making silver rings, so my favorite person signed us up.  Products pictured, to be given as gifts.  Pleased with the first efforts.   Process :  Measure a rectangular piece of silver about 1/4 inch wide (some  silver comes with patterns impressed on it) and cut (saw) to the ring size desired (per a handout indicating length for each ring size based on width of the silver), file the ends flat, then bend the 2 ends together with jewelry pliers until they touch and have no light between them, making the connection side flat so the ring will stand upright on that side.  Spritz the ring with anti-oxidizer, put it on a heat safe surface balanced on the flat side, and drip some flux on the connection area, then heat that area with a propane torch until dry.  Cut a piece of soldering wire about th...

Art-a-fact

  Art-a-fact This small, whimsical light green/beige/gold pouch was a first attempt at weaving in the SCA.   And, yes, a fun, energizing moment of “Ooh—I made a thing!”   Very little idea of what I was doing.   Boldly made an attempt at making a small thing, fighting the innate desire for instant perfection and the built in avoidance of failure.   Thanks Web, for providing access to people who post to teach what they learn!   Had no loom so made a single-use cardboard one (cut up to release the object d’art).   The colors were what was available at hand in modern, inexpensive fibers (all I’d used at that point in attempts at knitting).   Read I needed strong fibers for the warp that wouldn’t break so had some strong black thread I figured made sense to use.   Didn’t consider these would be visible later…live and learn.   Threw in some loose dangly bits to give it some playfulness and joy, not considering medieval samples.   Weavi...

New plants! Get yer new plants here!

It’s no secret that I LOVE plants.  Farming genes, a mom with a green thumb who shared her love of plants, and a passion for the outdoors/nature—I have many and can’t help growing more.  Want great food or eye candy without great cost?  Grow plants!   In winter I’m longing for green & over the top when plants stuck indoors (like me) surprise me with sudden bright colored blooms or tasty greens!  The pandemic found me me rooting new plants from store leftovers (the bottoms of celery, green onions, etc.) and growing new plants from cuttings.  They’s such joy in green things growing—especially when it’s not green outside.  If you’re not feeling the green gene, you can imagine my patient other half coping with ALL THE PLANTS.  Early spring happened and there were even more plants!  'Cuz, yes, I LOVE plants!  Couldn’t use them all myself, wanted them to have homes, and the prices of plants are ridiculous, so I had a thought.  Lo...
